A couple of weeks ago, I taught a zip pouch monogram stenciling class at Lovely Something’s in Bath, Ohio. Lovely Something’s is a stationary and gift store in the Akron area. Above the shop is a loft space for art and craft workshops. In mid-August, I taught a 2 hour class of 10 people decorating a canvas zip pouch with their monogram and gold foil polka dots.
The Set Up
We set up the room with a few tables filled with supplies and adorable place cards. And a spot for my bulletin board and 2 ironing boards.
Everyone enjoyed themselves! Not only was there lots of conversation and laughter, but everyone learned a thing or two about fabric surface design. I formatted the class so that everyone learned a bit about fabric painting, explored some design concepts and tried a few different techniques along the way. First, they made a freezer paper stencil and successful printed their own monogram on their pouch.
Then, they embellished the bag with gold foil polka dots and household item stamps like clothespins.
The End Results
I really enjoyed teaching this class. The best part how different everyone’s bag turned out. Although this photo above does not fully capture the range in the class, I love that given the same limited materials everyone ended up with a unique pattern or color scheme. I also loved that everyone was so focused on learning a new skill and creating a great finished bag. It was fun sharing my love of textile art with such a great group of people!
I am excited to be working on more workshops for Lovely Something’s this fall. Coming up are: a geometric painted tote bag and tassel class, a hand carved stamped pillow class and the stenciled pouch class again. If you live in the Akron area, check out their calendar for lots of exciting happenings!
