Sometimes, I don’t have the mental energy to agonize over fabric choice, so I just make up a bunch of samples! And that is what I did for this strawberry pillow tutorial. I made samples of strawberries with different fabrics, painted stripes in a variety of styles and tried three different applique stitches. It is amazing how changing something that seems small, like satin vs straight stitch can make a big difference in the feel of your piece. As you can see with my strawberry examples, we each have a lot of creative control over the end result of even something as straight forward as a pillow!
1. Strawberry Fabric and Seed Choice
I cut out samples for my strawberry in three types of fabric: (1) hand dyed cottons, (2) a small commercial print, and (3) solids. Then I painted seeds in 2 styles – thick and dark on the solid fabric and small and lighter on the hand-dyed. What a difference, right? The solids and the small print have a much crisper feel to me while the hand-dyed has a more natural look. The seed size also adds to this as well.
2. Background fabric
I made three different stripe samples as well: (1) small crisp stripes, (2) small brushy stripes and (3) large brushy stripes. To me, the thin solid stripes have a more classic feel, the white background (especially with the commerical print) has a bit more of a homey vibe and the larger brushy stripes look looser.
3. Applique Stitch
Isn’t it interesting how with small stripes and a solid fabric choice, this pillow would look total different? This creative choice is may favorite part of sewing!
